DENMARK PROVIDES ADDITIONAL AID FOR VICTIMS OF THE EARTHQUAKES IN SUMATRA. TOTAL AID OF 12,4 MILLION DKK.
The Danish Minister for Development Cooperation Ulla Tørnæs has decided to give an additional 10 million DKK in support for the victims of the earthquake on Sumatra. The Danish support now totals 12,4 million DKK.
Ulla Tørnæs says: “Even though it is still difficult to get a clear picture of the situation, there is no doubt that there is an urgent need for further aid. The number of victims who have died under collapsed buildings is estimated to be in the thousands and whole villages are destroyed. It is exactly in this kind of situation that we need to act quickly with aid.
Therefore I have decided to give an additional 10 million DKK in emergency aid to the victims of the earthquake in Indonesia. The money will mainly go to food and shelters to the many hundreds of thousands who have lost their homes. If we don't act quickly the scale of the disaster may be even larger.”
On top of that, Denmark has sent a light base camp module along with personnel for the module. Denmark has also provided the team leader, Steffen Smidth, of the UNDAC/EU-MIC team.
